Breaking the Stitching Barrier: Real-Time 12K 360 Stereoscopic Rendering in Godot

FMODS_Demo

Achieving high-fidelity, real-time omnidirectional stereoscopic (ODS) rendering has traditionally been a brute-force endeavor. Rendering a scene for VR, domed projections, or immersive video usually requires massive computational overhead to avoid visual artifacts.

Recently, I’ve been developing a purely mathematical approach to 360 stereoscopic rendering that bypasses these traditional bottlenecks. The theory is engine-agnostic—originally tested in Unreal Engine 5.7 as a lightweight alternative to NDisplay—but for this proof-of-concept, I’ve implemented it directly into a custom source build of Godot, which I’m calling FMGodot.

Here is a look at how this mathematical approximation works, why it outperforms traditional stitching, and how it handles 12K resolutions in real-time.

FMETP STREAM 6 is a major upgrade from V4: the core was re written in C++ and optimised for Unity URP, with native platform integrations to improve performance and latency. V6 expanded platform compatibility to include Vision OS and HoloLens 2 and introduced modern codecs and system optimisations.

Project Overview

Legible City Hong Kong represents the latest evolution of Jeffrey Shaw's seminal media artwork Legible City (1989–1991), developed in collaboration with Hong Kong fiction writer Dung Kai-cheung. Installed at the M+ museum, this iteration invites visitors to ride a stationary bicycle connected to a large screen that displays a digital representation of Hong Kong. Participants freely navigate this virtual environment, with the M+ Facade livestreaming their interactive cycling journeys in real-time on Friday nights, while pre-recorded versions are shown on other nights.

Technical Narrative

The visual framework draws upon cartographic principles, with the bicycle equipped with an iPad that displays the real cityscape alongside the routes being explored. Unlike previous versions with flat terrains, the intricate topography of Hong Kong introduced significant technical and creative challenges. The modified system now enables users to control direction, simulate cycling on varied slopes by adjusting elevation, and experience resistance, adding authenticity to the interaction. This enhances both the visual dynamics of the virtual environment and deepens the cycling experience, creating a more immersive and interactive engagement for the participants.
